Islamic group disrupts Seattle Holocaust memorial luncheon
The Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center‘s (WSHERC) mission is “to inspire teaching and learning for humanity in the schools and communities of this region through study of the Holocaust”. The group is immaculately apolitical, focused solely on promoting peace and human rights. It would be hard to find anyone offended by this message, hard but not impossible.
Today a small group (four in total) of Islamic activists led by Jeff Siddiqui of American Muslims of Puget Sound held signs and did their best to disrupt the Holocaust Center’s Voices for Humanity Fundraiser Luncheon at the Westin Hotel in Seattle . The Islamic activists showed a remarkable disinterest in the benevolent mission of the WSHERC and stunning ignorance of the anti-Semitic stereotypes that were precursors to the Shoah.
At the luncheon Michael Weltzman of the Simon Wiesenthal Center offered a hopeful message of growing international interest, including in some Islamic countries, of Holocaust studies. At the same time Siddiqui and friends held up tone deaf signage suggesting that the Holocaust Center is motivated more by greed than condemning hate.
While there must be a more insensitive act than accusing Jews of greed and love of money at a Holocaust memorial luncheon, I am hard pressed to say what it might be.
