US “We can’t stop Palestinian UN statehood bid” – and a new cartoon

As the Obama administration’s perfidious machinations in the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks continue, a new thinly veiled threat was revealed today.  Washington Post correspondent William Booth reports that the Obama administration, frustrated by the lack of progress in negotiations indicated a willingness to allow a Palestinian full statehood and recognition bid to be entertained by the United Nation.

Prior efforts at full UN recognition have been a non-starter as the United States, as a permanent member of the Security cancel has the power to veto and thus prevent any such action.  United Nations Rule 136 on membership requires that the Security Council first recommend the applicant State for membership before the admission can be considered by the General Assembly.

According to the Washington Post, U.S. diplomats have indicated that “The United States cannot prevent further strengthening of Palestinian independence at the U.N. and can’t put up much argument against it if this attempt at diplomacy fails”. Translation: Should negotiations fall apart the United States will not veto a Palestinian statehood bid should one be brought up before a vote of the Security Council. This approach virtually guarantees Palestinian admission into the United Nations as a full fledged state.

This  comes on the heels of Secretary of State John Kerry’s commination in February that failure of the current US sponsored negotiations would “lead to global boycotts and delegitimization of the Jewish state”.

The moral vacuity that would lead the Obama administration to flex it’s sizable muscles at the Jewish state while turning a blind eye to Syrian atrocities, Russian hegemony and Iranian nuclear deceit is also the inspiration for our latest Mike Report Cartoon.
