BDS Mob Threatens Local Businesses
Ed Mast, wearing his trademark red baseball cap stood at the curbside in front of Seattle’s Terminal 18 this past Monday as a long stream of huge semi-trucks rumbled slowly by. Screaming into his cellphone while waving his arms above his head, Mast guided protesters to the designated meeting point on Harbor Island. Leafleteers regaled passing truckers with pleas for solidarity with “occupied Palestine”.
Once the about 40 like-minded souls had fully assembled, the group began marching (with full police escort) in a somber column towards the Seattle offices of Zim shipping.
Today’s protest was part of the international effort to delegitimize and ultimately eliminate the Jewish state dubbed the BDS (Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions) movement. Gathered under the umbrella of Blocktheboat-NW, organizations represented included Ed Mast’s SEAMAC and Jewish Voice for Peace. The stated goal of today’s “action” was to deliver a letter of demands to representatives from Zim at their Seattle offices.
The protesters marched the ½ mile from the port to Zim offices chanting nursey rhyme style odes to violence while libeling the Jewish state with accusations of racism and genocide (see video below).
The Mike Report offered the protesters several opportunities to share their agenda and goals with our reader(s), but was rebuffed at every turn. When one protester began to open up about his disdain for the Israeli apartheid regime another pulled him back in line – directing him not to speak with us. Further efforts were sabotaged by one banner carrying woman who pointed at me and shouted “he’s a Zionist blogger!” (see video below of “Zionist blogger” incident).
En route to the Zim offices, the group halted their procession in front of SSA Marine, a Seattle based, publicly owned terminal management corporation. The company has been entangled in environmentalist resistance, regulatory hurdles and Tribal opposition to a proposed coal terminal at Cherry Point near the US/Canada border. Accusing the the company of complicity in “the genocide” of Native Americans of the Lummi Nation, the protesters made comparison to what they called “Zionist genocide” of Palestinians.
A MIKE REPORT SIDE NOTE: Friend of this blog and Metis Nation activist, Ryan Bellarose has repeatedly written on the indigenous status of the Jewish people in the land of Israel. He has strongly condemned efforts at conflating the persecution of indigenous peoples of North America to the experience of Arabs residing in Israel and Israeli controlled territories. Says Bellarose that opposing such comparisons “is important to indigenous people because we cannot allow the argument that conquerors [Arab Invaders of Jewish lands] can become indigenous. If we, as other indigenous people, allow that argument to be made, then we are delegitimising our own rights.”
An additional grievance mentioned repeatedly was SSA’s proximity to Zim offices. The BDS mob invested about a half hour in hurling threats and issuing ultimatums to the Seattle company (see video below).
Tensions rose as protesters began taunting workers peering from office windows at the disturbance below, with chants of “Come on out!”. In one of the more bizzare moments of this BDS inspired traveling circus, radical elder statesman Ed Mast grabbed the microphone to make a deal with the SSA management. Taking on a faux British accent, the octegenarian from the occupy movement offered “If you send someone out to take this letter out of our hands, then we’ll be done”. Emphasizing the limited timeframe of his proposal (or perhaps his mental state), Mast began making loud ticking noises, sounding like a cuccoo clock or perhaps a timebomb about to explode (see video below).
One of the marchers, annoyed at being unable to enter the SSA offices chastised the police officers for being “public employees and yet protecting “private property”. The protesters backed up the point with a rousing chant session of “people over profits!”
About an hour after the march commenced the group finally found their way to the Zim offices. Announcing through their small yet effective portable amplifier, Seattle actor and token Palestinian, Hanna Eady proclaimed “you are receiving this letter as written notice that you are being targeted for boycott and economic damage.” (See video below).
The BDS spokesperson then issued a not so veiled threat that “until the state of Israel complies with these conditions Puget Sound will join [allies] in denouncing, boycotting, blockading and causing other economic damage to your commerce and your corporation”
Once the threats and demands had been issued, Linda Frank (of whom we have written previously) along with Mr. Eady were permitted beyond the police line to hand deliver the BDS demands in written form to Zim office manager Craig Lind.
Frank, whose organization Jewish Voice for Peace is featured in the Seattle Jewish Federation/JTNews Guide to Jewish Washington, emerged from the Zim building a few minutes later to cheers from her fellow activists. Frank told the group that Zim office manager Mark Lind “was very nice” but “looked surprised when I told him I was from Jewish Voice for Peace.” (See video below).
On several occasions protesters deliberately stood in front of me to try to prevent this Zionist blogger from taking photographs of the protest. On one occasion the comical back and forth efforts of one particular activist turned into an impromptu dance lesson. (see video below).
The group pledged to escalate their disruptive, threatening activities against Zim unless Israel concede to their demands, including the admission of five million Palestinian Arabs into Israel, effectively ending the country’s existence as the only Jewish state.
SPECIAL THANKS: We extend a special note of gratitude to Mr. MHB who accompanied us to the BDS rally… just in case.
